Nigeria to Boycott AFCON 2025 Qualifier in Libya

Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong described the squad's treatment in Libya as "psychological tactics

Nigeria will boycott their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Libya after the Super Eagles were left stranded at an airport overnight.

The team, due to land in Benghazi, was diverted to Al Abraq, about 230km away, and locked inside the airport with no support or explanation from Libyan officials.

Nigeria's captain, William Troost-Ekong, announced that the squad decided not to play, urging government intervention. Nigeria's sports minister, Senator John Owan Enoh, prioritized the team's safe return and called for a formal complaint to the Confederation of African Football (CAF). CAF is investigating the incident, which Nigeria has described as traumatic and unsafe, while the Libyan Football Federation denied any foul play, attributing the disruption to logistical challenges.

The situation comes after Libya complained of similar difficulties during their recent visit to Nigeria. Despite Libya’s reassurances, the Nigerian team cited security concerns and poor conditions as reasons for refusing to play.
